Historic Meetings in England

The US Mission Network was well represented at a gathering of leaders from the Christian movement within the YMCA. Six members of our Board and Ministry Cabinet were part of this unique gathering in London, along with representatives from India, Hong Kong, Germany, Chile, England, and Africa.

USMN Update

The US Mission Network was formally organized just over three and a half years ago by a group of YMCA CEOs, COOs, Chaplains and key volunteers. It brought together remnants of the former John 17:21 conferences, along with those who participated in an annual gathering of chaplains and Y church pastors at Silver Bay Conference Center. A lot has happened over these years, so we thought it might be time to give everyone a quick update on the progress we’ve made and our plans for the future.

The World Alliance of YMCAs was founded in 1855 at its first World Conference, held in Paris. At that time, conference participants developed the YMCA’s first mission statement, the Paris Basis.

What thing is certain, we all got here from somewhere else! Knowing your history is an important aspect of maintaining a balanced sense of perspective.

Recently we asked our Ministry Cabinet to document some of the key recent historical markers in the development of the Christian mission of the YMCA. We think it would be good for all of us to consider the importance of what God has been doing to get us from where we were to where we are now!

Walking Through YMCA History

This summer David Newman had the privilege to take a sabbatical from his role as the Lead Pastor of Antioch Church, which meets at the Countryside YMCA in Lebanon, Ohio – just outside of Cincinnati.  This was not just some time off for “good behavior”… was an investment by his congregation and the Lilly Foundation into some post-doctoral studies David wanted to pursue about the foundations of the YMCA.  As most of our readers know, David’s doctoral thesis focused on the history of the YMCA.
