Feeding the Stomach and the Spirit
As part of their continued outreach to the local community, the Clark County Family YMCA in Vancouver, WA has been providing free lunches to kids from the surrounding neighborhoods for the past four years.
To date they have handed out more than 4,000 lunches. This Y partners with a community agency named SHARE to make this happen. SHARE provides the lunches and the Y provides both the space and volunteers.
Headed up by Chaplain Roger Button, this needed program ran Monday through Friday, June 25 through Aug. 10. After picking up the food at a local middle school and bringing it to the Y, volunteers set up tables and chairs and hand out the lunches. After, the volunteers and staff would play games with the kids in attendance. When the program concludes, the volunteers would reset the auditorium, cleaning the tables and chairs, sweeping the floor and making sure everything was clean for the next event.
This is just one more example of how a YMCA is making a difference in their local community by living out their Christian values through practical service. Roger and his team of 17 individuals donated over 315 volunteer hours and invested nearly $5,000 to make this program happen. Thanks to Executive Director Eddie White and his staff for supporting this ministry and creating opportunities to touch the lives of kids and families in their community.
