New Gaston County YMCA
Joe Pfeiffer and I, Larry Whittlesey, stopped by the Gaston County YMCA on our way to Blue Ridge Assembly. In addition to our desire to interact with the association’s staff, we included this stop for a particular reason—to see the ongoing construction of the new Robinwood Lake YMCA.
To say that this new Y will be ideally located is an understatement! Robinwood Lake sits on the edge Gastonia, North Carolina and has always been a favorite attraction for local residents. The YMCA was able to secure property on the lake to build this incredible new facility. Though not scheduled to open until Dec. 2017, the anticipation is already building in the surrounding community.
The new Y will take advantage of this beautiful and unique location, using the waterfront, forests, green space and state-of-the-art building to bring the YMCA mission to life.
One of the highlight features of the new Y will be the outdoor chapel. The chapel will be a multi-purpose space with the capability to host events, services, and family programming. With seating for 100, and room for more in the grass, there will be ample space available for churches to hold Sunday service as well as families to attend a movie night. This chapel will also prove to be an idyllic setting for weddings, Easter sunrise services, youth camp chapel services and countless other activities, serving as a constant reminder of the Christian mission of the YMCA.
Tony Sigmon, CEO, has made it clear that this part of the Y’s mission is vital to their success in the community. They have already established a presence in numerous faith-based efforts, led by their Chaplain and VP of Social Responsibility Dwayne Burks. The spacious new facility and chapel will enhance their ability to make an impact in their community.
Congratulations to the staff, members and donors of the Gaston County YMCA. May this new addition create more opportunities to show God’s love to those you have the privilege to serve.
