YMCA Chile Service Immersion Experience

March, 2017

Join the YMCA of Greater Fort Wayne on their Service Immersion Experience to Chile. This is a great opportunity to learn about the work that the Chilean Y performs. Engage in community service and experience the unique Chilean culture!

While preparing the next group of participants that will go to serve with the YMCA of Valparaiso, Chile, here’s an overview of the December 2016 trip.
Francisco Townsend, Director of Youth and International Programs for the YMCA of Greater Fort Wayne, took 12 participants to Chile. Among them, six were members, one was a student from the University of Saint Francis, and five were members from the Y in Idaho.
During the two-week trip, they restored the kindergarten patio at the YMCA school. This included demolishing and then repaving the current surface, installing gutters, painting, building window gardens and cleaning debris. They hosted a meal for 80 people living in homelessness and served coffee and sandwiches to the local Salvation Army residents.
They also paid for 12 outstanding students from the YMCA school to go to camp in the mountains. Finally, they got the opportunity to visit some cultural and historical sites in Valparaiso. They enjoyed working, making friends, the Chilean hospitality and supporting the work of the Y.
This month they will be taking four other staff members and their families to Chile: Amanda Letterman, COO at the YMCA of Blocker, Norfolk, Virginia; Caitlyn Hoerr, Director of Marketing and Development at the YMCA of Pierce and Kitsap Counties, Tacoma, Washington; and Amelia Staub, Fitness Instructor at the YMCA of Pennsylvania.
